'Hemingway's Heist' is a story of adventure, romance and stolen treasure. It begins on July 8, 1943 when the wealthiest man in the world, Reginald Vining, is killed in his home in Bimini and a fortune in gold bars disappears.
The accused murderer, Baron Alfred Brovania de Maurice, is acquitted but run out of the Bahamas as an “undesirable.” He flees to Key West and refuge with his friend Ernest Hemingway. The (remote) possibility that the two of them might have stolen Vining’s gold is the premise of the story.
In 2013, a dusty old trunk left in the storeroom of a Key West bar yields clues that ignite a modern day treasure hunt. Join the quirky crews of the Marion ll and the Albatross as they chase myths, legends and lies around the Caribbean trying to solve a 70-year-old mystery.
"I fell in love with Key West many years ago. In this story I have tried to capture the wackiness of Fantasy Fest. The body art, the partying, the weird and wonderful. Then take the reader to Bimini, Eleuthera and Spanish Wells while searching for a fortune in lost gold. One crew is led by an obsessively organized buttoned up former Navy Seal on a perfectly equipped boat. He is chased by the great grand son of the accused 1943 murderer and his drunken sidekick in a boat held together by chicken wire and duct tape."
Up until now the murder has never been solved and the gold never found. Could this band of adventurers and misfits stumble onto a fortune?

Chuck has great character development. Some characters you get to like while others you get to hate. Primary characters may change throughout the book. He takes you to the Keys and Caribbean through his descriptions of the places and people. I recently read "Key West Escape" (another of his books) and wanted to follow him through this adventure. While there is a little character crossover, I didn't feel you needed to read the books in any particular order to be able to follow the plot. I really enjoyed it.Product details

Not Bad
Well writen mystery novel that keeps your imagination going.
It's hard to put down once you start reading.
A different ending than I thought.
Started off OK but I had a hard time finishing it. And maybe it's just the version but I noticed a number of typos.
I bought this book yesterday...thinking that I would read it over the next week or so when I had time. I haven't been able to put it down and just finished reading the whole book. It kept me wanting more and more and kept me constantly trying to figure out the next twist and turn.
Chuck Ball is a Master with words and I look forward to reading more of his books!

Hemingway's Heist is a fun read. It's easy to lose oneself in the laid back worlds of Key West, Eleuthera, and Spanish Wells, but it's also easy to catch treasure hunting gold fever. As historical fiction, if you know anything about Bahamas history and the murder of Sir Harry Oakes in Nassau in 1943, it's not too hard to connect the dots here. This book transports the reader to palm trees and crystal clear blue water, revelry and romance, murder and goodness.
Although I've lived in Central Florida for nearly 30 years, I'd never been to the Keys. Chuck has sparked a desire to go. Thanks Chuck for the motivation.
